Further developing key technology electrolysis
Hydrogen has great potential for climate protection due to its optimum storage and transport properties. The demand from companies and private customers is increasing. This also becomes evident at this year's Intersolar Europe trade fair. The Munich-based company ostermeier H2ydrogen Solutions (OHS) and Handtmann e-solutions GmbH & Co. KG in Ochsenhausen, Germany both specialise in environmentally friendly, carbon-free hydrogen electrolysis and produce innovative modular systems. The cooperation between the two companies strengthens product development and distribution.
Hydrogen is an effective and therefore ideal energy carrier for storing electricity from renewable sources such as sun and wind. For the production of hydrogen (H2), water (H2O) must be split. In electrolysis, the chemical compound is dissolved by electric current in an electrolyser. If electricity from renewable energies is used in hydrogen electrolysis, the climate-friendly so-called green hydrogen is produced. In the production of green hydrogen by electrolysis, a very well balanced system of electrolysis stack and power electronics is the essential factor for high system efficiency and durability. ostermeier H2ydrogen Solutions (OHS for short) specialises in overall systems for autonomous energy supply using hydrogen as a building block for long-term storage. Handtmann focuses on modular, larger electrolysers and systems up to 1 MW for decentralised applications and is specialist for power electronics in this segment.
Cooperation for growth
OHS develops, produces and distributes decentralised storage solutions from Munich. In order to establish worldwide distribution as quickly as possible and make its climate-friendly solutions available to a broad market, OHS was seeking cooperation with various partners for small, medium and large energy solutions. Handtmann e-solutions from Ochsenhausen was found to be an ideal partner. Together, they can offer a wider power range of electrolyses from 2 to 1,000 kW. Furthermore, both aim to develop even more innovative products, simplify product design and further reduce the associated costs by combining their expertise.
Markus Ostermeier, Managing Director of OHS, believes that the wheel does not have to be reinvented: “Why competing against each other when cooperation can advance us much faster? We have to tackle the climate crisis with speed. At OHS, we have experience in product development, a very good network in the hydrogen environment and interesting research projects. We offer hydrogen-based overall systems for long-term storage. Handtmann is focused on electrolysers with significantly larger hydrogen production, which we do not yet cover. That complements each other perfectly and is pioneering.”
Handtmann e-solutions Managing Director Markus Ammann not only expects a larger product portfolio from this cooperation: “We bundle our knowledge and skills and thus learn faster. This is beneficial for development and helps to accelerate it. Building on the experience of OHS, we will be able to offer overall solutions for decentralised energy supply. We are capable of setting up production quickly and we will be able to reduce costs thanks to synergy effects and coordinate on funded projects. It all fits together in a goal-oriented way. We are truly delighted that we have met.”
The Handtmann Group of Companies is represented worldwide with 4,300 employees in six business divisions and is headquartered in Biberach, Germany. Being an independent company within the Group, Handtmann e-solutions, the internationally positioned specialist in power electronics, boasts production know-how and manufactures, among other things, electrolysers as complete plug'n'produce systems in 20 ft or 40 ft containers scalable from 100 kilowatts to 1 megawatt corresponding to a hydrogen production of 2 to 20 kg/h.
OHS - ostermeier H2ydrogen Solutions GmbH was founded in 2021 by two mechanical engineers and is based near Munich. Its electrolysis kit (electrolyses from 2 to 100 kW, corresponding to a production of 0.05 to 2 kg/h) allows electricity to be converted into hydrogen decentrally and utilised on site. Potential applications include the use of hydrogen as technical gas in industry and as fuel in the mobility sector, for example in forklift trucks. Furthermore, storage solutions based on hydrogen are ideal for the building sector with the “Ecore” seasonal storage tank being a typical product example.
