"I wanted things to move forward"
Marcel Kircheis, master maintenance technician at the Handtmann Leichtmetallgießerei Annaberg GmbH
"In 1999, I started my training at the Handtmann Metallgusswerk in Annaberg. At this time, the profession of mechatronics engineer – a combination of mechanic and electrician – was still really new and Handtmann was one of the first training companies that offered it as a career. That wasn't easy for us, also because we were the first trainees that the company had had for a long time. Everyone had to adjust to us and to the new training course. Today, it's totally different. Handtmann offers 5-6 trainee positions in a wide variety of professions every year at the Annaberg site.
After my training, I was recruited by the Maintenance department and I worked for a long time in three or four shift schedules. But I wanted things to move forward. Therefore I decided to train to be a maintenance foreman. The decision changed everything. My superiors and colleagues supported me from the very outset. From a substitute for when I was at school to switching to the early shift – there was always a solution. Since May 2014, I've been employed as a maintenance foreman and I've never regretted taking this step.
Together with a colleague, I organise the 20 employees in the Maintenance department. I spend a lot of time at my desk, for example buying spare parts or asking for quotes. But I don't let anything stop me from going out on jobs with my colleagues every now and then. I enjoy using my experience to help and like having a screwdriver in my hand.
Despite the many years that I've been at Handtmann, all I can say is it's never boring. At the Annaberg site, the Maintenance department takes care of everything – from a faulty car park barrier to a new casting system. I enjoy working with my colleagues. I therefore have contact with a few of them outside of work as well.
On arrangement with my colleagues I can organise my working hours flexibly. I can thus react spontaneously to unexpected situations in my private life – this is a modern solution that not every company offers. There are no "bureaucratic" regulations, allowing me to do my work in the ideal way. Extensive training and further education programmes are also on offer.
Applying to Handtmann was one of the best decisions I ever made. At the company, anyone who shows that they want to progress gets the chance to prove it. It's one of the largest companies in the region, it's future-proof, modern and pays the collectively agreed wages. What more do you want?
